It is no surprise then that we can trace musical tradition to people of all cultures and backgrounds, and that sound has been used as therapy for centuries. The term ‘Sound Healing’ is now used to describe these techniques and traditions, and is becoming a trusted method of healing in the health and wellness world. What is sound healing?

Sound Healing uses elements of music as a way of improving physical and emotional health and well-being. Participants are guided by a trained sound healing practitioner, and sessions may involve sitting or lying down in meditation while music is played, or it may include hands-on therapy, having vibrations applied to the body using special tools like a tibetan singing bowl or tuning fork. You might also be encouraged to participate by singing along, dancing, or even using a musical instrument.

Sound Healing therapies have been used to treat various ailments including:

  • Anxiety disorders
  • Depression
  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Insomnia
  • Stress disorders
  • Dementia
  • Physical pain and injury

Some of the observed benefits of sound healing may include:

  • Decrease in anxiety symptoms
  • Improved moon
  • Lower stress
  • Pain management
  • Lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels

Why Sound?

We use music for everything from ritual, relaxation, celebration, entertainment, self-expression, and communication. Despite whether we consider ourselves musical or not, we cannot deny that sound in all its forms has an affect on our moods, our bodies and our minds. Music has the power to unite us across cultures, languages, and even belief systems. Sound is powerful healing tool!

How sound healing works?

Sound healing is the practice of promoting shifts in our bodies and minds by entrainment ( the ability of our energy to naturally synchronize to strong external rhythms or pulses). Sound Healing therapies tune fluctuating waves (physically in the body or mentally and emotionally in the mind) to specific frequencies for relaxation and healing. As we synchronize with these frequencies, it is possible for us to return to our resting beta rhythm (waking consciousness), alpha rhythm (relaxed), and even theta (meditation) and delta (deep sleep; where healing occurs) states of consciousness and being. Certain tones or sounds can be used to target areas of the body or mind which are in need of healing.

Why sound healing works?

Sound waves are converted into electrical signals that travel up to our brains where they are interpreted, triggering responses in our whole system. This process affects our emotions, releases hormones that alter our bodies and our moods, and provokes certain reactions such as singing or dancing.

Sound heals because it makes us happy and changes our mood. Music provokes the release of emotions, allowing us to witness and better process our feelings.  It is reported that regular music listeners experience less pain, are generally happier, and tend to have a calmer, more positive mindset.

What’s more, research has proven that the effects of music can bring more symmetry to the left and right hemispheres of the brain, improving communication, language development, our ability to focus, our memory, and response to stimuli. Neuroplasticity, or the ability of the brain to reorganize itself, allows the benefits of music to be experienced regardless of age, experience, or previous exposure!

Now that you know how and why sound healing works, there is no excuse! What are you waiting for?! Make sure to join us at OM Yoga Marrakech for our next Sound Healing and experience all of the healing benefits of these soothing sounds!
